The Interactive Atlas provides an engaging, intuitive and contemporary way for academics, policy makers and others to explore and understand the insights created through the UPLIFT project.

Through the UPLIFT project, international partners have been working collaboratively to collate vast amounts of data to develop a broad picture of youth inequality across Europe since the 2008 global financial crisis. Focusing on sixteen urban areas, they have also gathered deep insights on post-crisis policy responses, and continue to develop rich case studies in eight of these locations.

In conducting this work, partners aim to bring together a wide range of perspectives and experiences to provide a body of evidence to inform the co-design of innovative policy tools. Championing participatory approaches and a bottom-up ethos, the project ultimately hopes to put young people’s voices at the centre of youth policy.

This approach makes it imperative that outputs produced throughout the project are both accessible to a range of audiences, and able to influence key stakeholders. To facilitate this, The Young Foundation has developed an Interactive Atlas to provide an engaging, intuitive and contemporary way for academics, policy makers and others to explore and understand the insights created through the UPLIFT project.

The atlas has been designed to include several exciting features, which cater for the variety of audiences and purposes set out in the project’s rationale.

Users can navigate between numerous national indicators of inequality analysed in D1.3:

  • Descriptions of each indicator enable users to make sense of what these are showing

  • Colour gradients and pop-up tables enable users to make comparisons between different places

  • A time-slider enables users to see changes over time, following the 2008 global financial crisis

The map also highlights the sixteen Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) included in the UPLIFT project, with links to their urban stories – which draw together insights on inequalities and policies affecting urban youth, across education, employment and housing, from the D2.2 urban reports.

Finally, there is an innovation story which enables users to explore the case studies of post-crisis policy innovation from D2.3.

This is the first iteration of the Interactive Atlas. Stay tuned for further updates, incorporating additional insight and new ways to explore the data.
